Wolf: Ich fragte meine Lehrer, ob ich im Unterricht schlafen dürfe

Lee ‚Wolf‘ Jae-wan hat erreicht, wovon viele League of Legends-Spieler nur träumen können. Zweimal konnte er bereits mit seinem Team SK Telecom T1 die World Championship gewinnen. In einem Interview mit Inven äußerte er sich nun über seine Erziehung, persönliches Leben und Karriere. Eine besonders witzige Anekdote aus seinem Leben ist die Tatsache, dass er während des Beginns seiner Profi-Karriere seine Lehrer fragte, ob er im Unterricht schlafen dürfe, da er bis spät in die Nacht trainiere.

Der Traum, ein Pro-Gamer zu werden, keimte bei Wolf schon in seiner Schulzeit auf. Als er eine PowerPoint-Präsentation über seinen Traumjob anfertigen sollte, wählte er den ‚Job‘ des Pro-Gamers. 

I naturally wanted to become a pro gamer from then. There was a time in school where I have to make a PowerPoint presentation about my dream job as a class project. I chose to do mine on pro gamers.

Dieser Wunsch brachte aber auch Schattenseiten mit sich. Bis spät in die Nacht trainierte Wolf, um einer der besten Spieler der Welt zu werden. So kam es, dass er seine Lehrer fragte, ob er im Unterricht schlafen dürfe.

Maybe it was because I was honest, but six of the 10 allowed me to do so. My English teacher is the most memorable. When they would come to teach, they would say, ‘Hey pro gamer! Go to sleep!’ Of course there were also teachers that didn’t allow me to do this so I accumulated a lot of penalty points. There ended up being a meeting between the teachers and my parents because of that. I was very sorry.

Doch auch seine Eltern musste Wolf von seinem Weg überzeugen. Besonders seine Mutter sei nicht einverstanden, mit dem Weg, den ihr Sohn einschlug. So wäre es ihr lieber gewesen, wenn ihr Sohn ein Studium aufgenommen und einen richtigen Job angenommen hätte.

Even though I wasn’t good at studying, she wanted me to study and get a traditional job. She cried a lot as well.

Besondere Unterstützung erhielt er vor allem von seinem Head-Coach Park Jeong-seok, der ihn regelmäßig zu Hause besuchte und mit Wolfs Eltern über das Talent und die Möglichkeiten im E-Sport sprach.

(Head coach Park Jeong-seok) also came to my house personally to convince my parents. He told them about my skills, how much the winnings for the world championship was, what the team was like, stuff like that. It’s thanks to him that I got my start.

Trotz oder gerade wegen seiner Karriere als Profi-Spieler, pflegte Wolf auch weiterhin eine besondere Beziehung zu seiner Familie, besonders zu seiner Mutter.

I even gave her my credit card. My mother’s health isn’t great. Because she has a heart condition, I want her to eat good food and pay for her hospital bills, but she rarely uses it. It hurts my heart a bit. There are a lot of good restaurants around the house. I hope she would eat well and take care of herself, but I think she feels sorry. When she said how she could use her son’s hard earned money, I smiled and told her that her son makes money easily, that all he does is sit down and move his fingers.
